Discovering Sharan Forest: A Journey Through Nature’s Embrace

The Adventure Begins

On June 25, 2023, my friends and I set out on an unforgettable trip to Sharan Forest. It was one of those spontaneous adventures that promises memories for a lifetime. My friend Salman and I had meticulously planned this trip, and our first stop was to pick up Faizan from his office in Saddar, Rawalpindi. Despite his busy schedule, Faizan managed to wrap up his work, and we left around 10 PM.

The night air was filled with excitement as we traveled towards Abbottabad to meet our friend Rehan. We reached his home around 1 AM, where we took a short break before continuing our journey. Although our friend Salman Sheikh couldn’t join us due to family commitments and Kamal our group friend was in Saudia Arabia but their spirits of adventure was with us. We missed them in whole trip!

The Journey to Sharan Forest

After a brief rest, we left Rehan’s home and headed towards Balakot. The cool night breeze accompanied us, and we reached Cordillera Resort in Balakot just in time for the Fajar prayer. The serenity of the place set the perfect tone for our adventure. After offering our prayers, we continued towards Paras.

Paras is where we parked Salman’s car in a paid parking area and had a hearty breakfast. The local flavors energized us for the next leg of our journey. We hired a Jeep for the final ascent to Sharan Forest, a thrilling 1.5-hour ride through rough mountainous terrain surrounded by dense pine trees and lush green grass.

Experiencing Sharan Forest

As we moved, the air grew cooler, and the scenery became even more breathtaking. Sharan Forest, located in the scenic Kaghan Valley, is a hidden gem. Positioned at an elevation of 2425 meters, it is approximately 16 kilometers from Paras and 30 kilometers from Balakot. The untouched beauty, dense pine trees, and serene environment make it a paradise for nature enthusiasts and adventure seekers.

We were greeted by the sight of camp pods set up by PTDC and some private sites. These eco-friendly wooden pods, developed by the KP government, offer a unique and immersive camping experience. Each pod can accommodate two people, providing comfortable beds and solar electricity arrangements. There’s also a dedicated kitchen and dining area, ensuring a comfortable stay amidst nature’s embrace.

A Day in Sharan Forest

We spent the day exploring the beauty of Sharan Forest. The lush greenery, the sound of birds chirping, and the cool breeze created an atmosphere of tranquility. We took numerous photos and videos, capturing the magic of the forest. The passage lined with chinar trees, adorned with yellow-golden leaves, added to the stunning beauty of the surroundings.

We took short breaks by streams, enjoying the refreshing water and the serene environment. Hiking and trekking are popular activities here, allowing you to immerse yourself in the pristine natural surroundings.

Horse riding offers a delightful way to explore the area at a leisurely pace, and organizing a BBQ party amidst nature’s tranquility is an experience not to be missed. Camping under the starry sky, with the absence of light pollution, allowed us to fully relax.

Discovering Sharan Forest: A Hidden Gem

Sharan Forest is located in the Kaghan Valley, in the north of Pakistan. It remains relatively untouched despite its increasing popularity among tourists, maintaining its serene, clean, and sophisticated atmosphere. Nearby, Mosa ka Mussalla peak stands tall at an impressive height of 13,370 feet. However, due to the presence of leopards and black bears, it is advisable to hire a local guide for hiking to the peak.

In addition to the captivating beauty of the forest, there are several attractions in and around the area worth exploring. Upper Kaghan Valley offers stunning views of the surrounding landscapes and valleys, providing a visual feast for nature lovers. Manor Valley, known for its breathtaking natural beauty and panoramic vistas, offers a serene escape from bustling city life. For adventure enthusiasts, a hike to Manshi Top is highly recommended, rewarding trekkers with mesmerizing views of snow-capped mountains and lavish meadows.

The delightful weather throughout the year makes Sharan Forest an appealing destination for outdoor activities and camping adventures. The average temperature ranges from 15 to 25 degrees Celsius, providing comfortable conditions for visitors.

Returning Home

As evening approached, we left Sharan Forest, making our way back to Paras and then to Balakot. We enjoyed a delicious dinner at Cordillera Resort, reflecting on the day’s adventures. Dropping Rehan off in Abbottabad and Faizan in Rawalpindi, Salman and I finally returned home to Taxila, filled with gratitude for the beautiful day we had experienced.
