So there we were, Day 2 (5th October 2024 – Saturday) of our epic Naran trip, waking up early with dreams of adventure (and food, lots of food). Despite the mountain air and the crisp morning chill, we dragged ourselves out of our cozy beds, ready for another day of unforgettable moments.
Our plan? Have breakfast in Batakundi—a little gem of a town located in the Kaghan Valley, about 16 kilometers from Naran. Why Batakundi, you ask? Because Rehan had a friend there who owned a restaurant, and we don’t say no to breakfast served with a side of local secrets and hidden trek points!
Breakfast in Batakundi: The Feast and the Fables
As we rolled into Batakundi, the restaurant owner was already waiting for us, like a scene straight out of a mountain movie. We piled into his place and were greeted with a breakfast spread that could make any foodie cry with joy: delicious hot channay, omelettes, crispy parathas, and the karak chai.
The gup shup was next-level. The restaurant owner, clearly a man of the mountains, entertain us with stories of hidden trek points known only to the locals. He even planted the seed of an epic journey to Gilgit and Naltar Valley, waxing lyrical about the breathtaking beauty of those places. For a hot second, we all felt like explorers about to discover hidden treasure.
But reality came crashing down when we realized two things: Faizan was not feeling well and Salman Sheikh had to be back for duty by Monday. So, just like that, our grand Gilgit plan crumbled. Instead, we made a pact to take extra care of Faizan, who, poor guy, was looking like he’d rather be anywhere but here.

Jalkhand and Lulusar Lake: The Day Camping Adventure
With Faizan bundled up like a mountain mummy in Safdar Mamu’s Prado, we continued on to Jalkhand, our next big stop for day camping. Jalkhand, for those who haven’t had the pleasure, is one of those places that look straight out of a desktop wallpaper—snow-capped peaks, lush valleys, and a river gently flowing through. We marked it as our camp spot, but before we could set up, someone (ahem, Rehan) had the bright idea to push further to Lulusar Lake first.
Lulusar Lake, with its shimmering blue waters surrounded by towering mountains, is like something out of a fantasy novel. It’s also one of the highest lakes in Pakistan, which means two things: stunning views and freezing temperatures! But hey, that’s what bonfires are for, right? We took in the views, snapped some pics for the instagram, and then headed back to Baisar to collect the marinated meat for our upcoming BBQ feast.

The Surprise Snowfall in Baisar
Now, Baisar might not be a household name, but boy, did it surprise us! As we waited for our meat to marinate (because BBQ isn’t BBQ without proper prep), something magical happened. The first snowfall of the season! Yep, out of nowhere, the skies decided to shower us with delicate snowflakes, turning Baisar into a winter wonderland right before our eyes.
Naturally, we did what any self-respecting group of friends would do in the first snow—we ordered biryani. Because what goes better with snow than spicy, fragrant rice and meat? As we sat there, surrounded by the falling snow and enjoying our biryani, it was one of those rare moments where life just feels… perfect.

Campfires, Local Boys, and Bonfire Chats in Jalkhand
With our bellies full and hearts content, we made our way back to Jalkhand for some good camping. This place was unreal—surrounded by mountains, a flowing river nearby, and the kind of peaceful silence you only get in the wilderness. We set up camp, built a bonfire, and got ready for a day of relaxation.
Faizan, still under the weather, wisely stayed in the Prado, wrapped in blankets and looking like a cozy human shawarma. Meanwhile, the rest of us sat around the fire, cracking jokes, sharing stories, and enjoying the beauty of the moment. Some local boys even joined us, drawn to the bonfire and our friendly vibe. They shared their stories, and we shared ours. The mix of cultures, laughter, and bonfire smoke made for an unforgettable day.
A Surprise Discovery in Burwai
On our way back, we stumbled upon a hidden gem—a unique and beautiful mini-resort in Burwai called The Adventurers Resort. Recently opened, this theme-based resort and restaurant caught our eye with its adventure-themed architecture and youthful, fresh vibe. The resort already looks impressive, and they have plans to expand with a hotel soon. The whole place feels like something straight out of a travel magazine! I can’t wait to stay at their hotel once it opens. It’s definitely a spot that sets itself apart from the typical resorts in the north, and I’m already planning a return visit to experience it fully!

Back to Naran: Rain, Rooftop BBQ, and the Legendary Goat Leg
After a day well-spent, we packed up and headed back to our base camp hotel in Naran. Just as we reached, the heavens opened up again—not with snow this time, but with rain. And you know what that means? BBQ in the rain, baby!
We placed our BBQ gear to the hotel’s rooftop balcony and proceeded to grill the most delicious goat leg, all while the raining around us. The hotel owner even joined us for the feast, and let me tell you, the conversation was as spicy as the BBQ. Between mouthfuls of tender meat and sips of warm qahwa, we discussed everything from travel to politics to why Faizan shouldn’t ever be allowed near a grill again (kidding, Faizan!).
By the end of the night, we were full, happy, and ready to crash. The rain, the BBQ, and the gup shup with the hotel owner made for the perfect end to a day packed with adventure, food, and a whole lot of laughs.
To be continued… because Day 3 is coming, and trust me, it only gets better! Read here >
